What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)?
SCA is a condition in which the heart stops suddenly and unexpectedly due to a malfunction in the heart’s electrical system. This malfunction causes a life threatening abnormal rhythm called an “Arrhythmia”.The most common “Arrythmia” is “Ventricular Fibrillation”.
When a Ventricular Fibrillation occurs, the heart’s rhythm becomes so “chaotic” that the heart quivers and can no longer pump blood to the brain.
How can SCA be treated?
The only way to combat this condition is with an electrical shock delivered by a small piece of medical equipment called a defibrillator. The pulse from the defibrillator actually stops the chaotic state of the heart, allowing it to reset and start beating normally.
